How to avoid DV lottery scams in Ethiopia

Fake winner messages, “guaranteed” visas and hidden fees: the warning signs of a DV scam, and how to check any DV service.

Last updated 2026-10-30

Every DV season, people in Ethiopia lose money to fake agents and fake winner messages. These are the facts that protect you.

Facts from the U.S. government

  • The only official place to enter is dvprogram.state.gov. Entries are made only while registration is open.
  • Results are shown only on the official Entrant Status Check, using your confirmation number. Keep that number safe.
  • The U.S. government does not tell winners by SMS, phone call, Telegram or a message asking for money.
  • Nobody can raise your chance of being selected. Selection is random.

Warning signs

  • “Guaranteed” selection or a guaranteed visa
  • A message saying you won and asking you to pay to “confirm” or “process” your win
  • An agent who won't give you your official confirmation number
  • Prices that change after you've paid, or fees that weren't written down
  • An offer to enter you twice for better chances — two entries get you disqualified
  • Websites or documents with U.S. government seals, flags or names that aren't from a .gov address

How to check any DV service

  1. Ask for a written price and a written refund policy before you pay.
  2. Call them: check that a real person answers and can explain every step.
  3. Make sure you get the official confirmation number, not just a receipt from the agent.
  4. Check your own result on the official Entrant Status Check.

How we work

Yene DV is a private Ethiopian service, reachable by phone and Telegram. We aren't the U.S. government. Our prices are written on this website and include the $1 government fee. We submit one entry for you on the official website, and we post the official confirmation number in My application only after a second staff member has checked it.
